Armed Robbery

Dismissed

Due to his criminal history, Katie’s client was facing a potential sentence of life without parole. She filed a motion to suppress all evidence regarding the alleged robbery that was seized from the client.  Katie persuaded the judge that the arresting officer didn’t have sufficient evidence to stop, detain and search her client (at gunpoint, no less) at the time of his arrest. All evidence seized during the arrest was suppressed and State dismissed all charges.

Instead of serving a sentence of life without parole, Katie’s client went home.

Murder Trial

Acquitted

Katie’s client was charged with beating the alleged victim to death by means of asphyxiation and blunt force trauma. She vigorously cross examined the State’s medical examiner. She also presented testimony from an independent medical examiner that she hired, challenging the State’s finding of homicide, and asserting that victim died of natural causes. After considering charges in the indictment and lesser included offenses of involuntary manslaughter, the jury acquitted our client of all charges.

Aggravated Assault & Aggravated Battery

Charges Dismissed

After presenting evidence of the accuser’s violent nature to the prosecutor, including witness statements and found 911 calls that showed the true events for Katie’s client, the prosecutor dismissed all charges immediately prior to jury selection.

Instead of serving over twenty years in prison for merely defending herself, Katie’s client left the courtroom with her family as a free woman.

Murder Case

Charges dismissed

Katie’s client was wrongfully charged with a murder and was unable to make the bond that the judge set, so Katie filed a speedy trial demand. At a motions hearing, Katie presented evidence to the court that the sole eyewitness to the murder merely “guessed” at the identity of the shooter when choosing her client from the photo lineup that the police presented. She also presented the prosecutor with cell phone records that our client was across town using his cell phone at the time of the murder. After motions and the presentation of credible alibi evidence, the prosecutor dismissed all charges the week before trial.

Instead of serving life in prison for a murder that he did not commit, Katie’s client was released from jail.

Armed Robbery Trial

Mistrial granted

Katie’s client was charged with Armed Robbery and firearm charges.  He was facing a potential life sentence. She learned midway through trial that the State had failed to provide over 40 pages of information from investigating officer’s file. Despite the fact that the trial was almost completed, Katie was able to convince the court to declare a mistrial due to the State’s failure to follow the law and provide all information to the defense before the trial began.

Burglary Charges

Charges dismissed

Katie’s client was charged with burglary, which arose from a break-in at a Johns Creek home where the homeowner came in and startled the burglar. The homeowner eventually picked her client out of a photographic lineup. However, due to our extensive investigation, Katie learned that the police had previously showed photographic lineups to the homeowner that contained her client’s picture and the homeowner failed to pick out her client. In response to this, the police THREW THOSE LINEUPS IN THE TRASH. Katie filed a motion to suppress the unlawful photographic identification of her client and a motion to dismiss the charges due to the State’s failure to preserve evidence favorable to her client.

She also investigated and provided the State with a strong alibi, including cell phone records and documents from a rental car agency, showing that her client was renting a car across town at the exact time of the burglary. The prosecutor dismissed all charges at motions hearing.

Instead of facing a trial and a potential sentence of twenty years in jail, Katie’s client walked out of the courtroom with his family.

Lawsuit Against the City of Atlanta

Obtained all information

In the course of defending a client against a trafficking in narcotics charge, we sent an open records request to the City of Atlanta to obtain their secret schedule for the payment of confidential informants in drug busts. The police department denied that the information existed and refused to honor our request. After serving demand letters on the chief of police and the City of Atlanta, we filed a lawsuit to demand that the police department acknowledge the existence of the information and turn it over to us. After demanding mediation, the city of Atlanta ultimately admitted that the payment schedule existed and provided us with a copy, so that we could defend our client against the charges in her case.

Aggravated Assault Charges

Dismissed

Katie’s client was charged with attempting to hit a man with her car, who was in the process of attempting to forcefully repossess the car. After Katie’s extensive investigation, she discovered that the man was attempting to repossess the car without legal authority, and the client was authorized to defend herself against the man. Katie filed a motion to dismiss the charges, and after a lengthy hearing, the Court agreed with Katie and her client and dismissed the case.

Instead of serving over twenty years in prison for merely defending herself, Katie’s client left the courtroom with her family as a free woman.

Murder Charges

Dismissed

After shooting a man during a verbal altercation, Katie’s client was charged with murder. Katie filed a motion with the court, asking for the charges to be dismissed. At the hearing, Katie presented extensive evidence that the client was actually defending himself and the deceased was the aggressor during the fight. The Court didn’t wait to rule on the motion and dismissed the charges immediately.

Instead of serving a life sentence, Katie’s client walked out of the courtroom with her and joined his family as a free man.

DUI Charges

Reduced

Katie’s client was charged with driving a car under the influence of drugs after causing an accident on I-75. After an extensive investigation and compiling a great deal of mitigation showing the client’s attempts to better his life, Katie convinced the prosecutor to reduce the charges.

Instead of jail time and the loss of his driver’s license, Katie’s client walked out of the courtroom with his license intact.

Reckless Driving

Reduced

Katie’s client was charged with reckless driving after causing a multi-car accident while driving at a high rate of speed. After hiring Katie and following her comprehensive plan to prepare the case for court, Katie and her client were able to show the prosecutor that the client had learned from this serious mistake and was no longer a risk on the road. The prosecutor reduced the charges and allowed the client to plead nolo contendere.

Instead of jail time, multiple points on his license (and the loss of his driver’s license), Katie’s client paid a small fine and walked out of the courtroom with his driving privileges intact.
